Jessica Journals

Welcome!

Hello! I'm Jessica, and welcome to Jessica Journals, to my little home on the internet! A cartoon image, from the shoulders up, of a curly brown haired white woman wearing glasses, a purple top, and gray dungarees. Behind are large stripes in black, gray, white and purple, with faint stars.

This is a website where I write about various interests of mine, mostly involving various aspects of techonology including self hosting, productivity and applications.

However, I have recently expanded to include more interests of mine, taking note from the resurgence of websites inspired by those from the 1990s and 2000s, the era I began participating online.

The content has been organised into a series of rooms, as if this website were a house. You can click on “Rooms” in the navigation bar above to find out more about the rooms and what is inside of them. Posts can also be navigated through the “Tags” page if you prefer instead, or by clicking on “Posts” which lists all the posts chronologically, both also found in the navigation bar. Lastly, “Recent Changes” of the last ten updated posts has been listed below.

AOTY 2023

In this post, I’ll republish my thoughts on my top twenty Albums Of The Year, which I originally shared on Mastodon in late December.

The list exclusively features female vocalists, leans heavily towards pop, and, of course, is just my personal opinion.

I’ll post a list of just the names of the albums and artists at the end.

Another Website Revamp 2023

Although it has not been long since my previous website revamp, I was recently inspired by fellow users on Mastodon and their various websites based on the YesterWeb and IndieWeb movements. In this post I’ll go into why such movements have resonated with me, the principles I wish to implement in this website, and what changes I have made.

Schema on Hugo

While undergoing my website rebuild, I experimented with implementing two standards from Schema.org: MusicRecording and Recipe. While I decided against including the former, I think explaining how they can be used within a Hugo setup may be helpful for others, so I have attempted a little tutorial here trying to walkthrough how I got the MusicRecording Schema integrated with Hugo, and then show the working code I have for the Recipe standard.

Glitch

Glitch was a browser based video game launched in 2011 and closed in 2012. The game featured activities such as completing quests, growing plants and cooking food, and there was a levelling up system in place where skills were gained, upgrades earned, and achievements to aspire towards. There was also a trading aspect, where products grown or crafted could be sold for currants, the currency of Glitch. I was a BETA tester of Glitch joining September 2011, and enjoyed my short time there, getting 313 achievements,102 skills, and 101 upgrades.
