In my last post for #WeblogPoMo2024 before writing tomorrow about my overall thoughts of the month long challenge, I thought I should today, very briefly, write about Yuito, the application I use to access Mastodon on my Android phone (I rarely use Mastodon on my desktop, something I will go into at the end), how I arrange my tabs and view content, and what I am hoping for in the future.

Tusky

When I joined Mastodon, I initially used the default Android app, but was not too impressed. I then tried out a series of third-party applications, and began using Tusky. What I liked about it was how I could scroll between different aspects of the Fediverse, such as notifications, lists, hashtags, home, direct messages, bookmarks, trending posts and trending hashtags. However, there was a limit as to how many could be used on Tusky, and I was annoyed I had to either merge some sections, or omit them altogether.

I wanted more!!

And although I now see Tusky has been updated to remove this limit, it was there when I was going through all this a couple of years ago, and and such…

Tabs

After some searching around, I came across a fork of Tusky, a Japanese developed app called Yuito. It adds a few different features, but most notably for me, an unlimited amount of tabs so I can slide through the Fediverse sideways to my hearts content, without being limited.

I have my tabs currently set up like so:

  • Notifications
    • I don’t have anything filtered here, so I see everything relating to me.
  • List 1
    • A list of users who I used to share an instance with and wish to keep in close contact with.
  • List 2
    • A list of users I have never shared an instance with, but don’t want to miss their posts.
  • Local
    • Posts by fellow members of my current instance.
  • Trending Posts
    • Posts which are popular, picked up by my instance.
  • Hashtags 1
    • A feed for computing stuff, hashtags followed: FOSS, IndieWeb, Hugo, SelfHosting, Arch, KDE
  • Hashtags 2
    • My feed for vegan things, hashtags followed: Vegan, PlantBased
  • Hashtags 3
    • My “pretty” visual feed, hashtags followed: Mastodon, Fungi, LichenSubscribe, BloomScrolling
  • Hashtags 4
    • Arts and crafts feed, hashtags followed: Pottery, Quilting
  • List 3
    • A list of bots I like to occasionally scroll through.
  • Home
    • A massive feed of all the posts of all the people I follow.
  • Direct Messages
    • I don’t need to see my direct messages often, so I place this at the end.

Wishlist

My biggest issue with Yuito is how I cannot theme it, stuck using three non-customisable themes of Dark, Light and Black - I want some Rosé Pine up in here! If Tusky adds such an ability, I may jump back to it now I know they have unlimited tabs!

I also wish there was a way to access Yuito/Tusky on my desktop, because although I did narrow down to three possibilities, the three web interfaces of: Phanpy, Trunks, and Elk, I found them to be lacking in all the features Yuito/Tusky has. I may one day revisit this and give those three another good try, but for now, if I must use Mastodon on my desktop, I just go to my instance and use it from there.
